Memphis man killed in Pit Bull attack, others injured.

FAST FACTS:

Elderly man killed, three other hurt in pit bull attack

Two firefighters were hurt when they attempted to help the man

(Memphis 7/20/2010) One person is dead and others are hurt after a pit bull attack in Memphis this afternoon. The man apparently died from a heart attack following the Pit Bull attack.

The attack happened at 230 N. Manassas near the intersection of Manassas and Poplar Avenues.

71-year-old William Parker was attacked by two dogs while walking from one yard to another.

Parker died after being taken to the hospital.

When firefighters arrived on the scene to treat the man, two of them were attacked.

Lt. Ray Pelletier and Ken Hartfield are being treated at a Methodist University Hospital and released.

William Parker's daughter Gardelia and Kevin Stringfellow were also injured and are listed in good condition.

Bernard Humphrey is the owner of the Pit Bulls.  His own mother kicked him AND the dogs out because she was so scared.

This is not the first fatal Pit Bull attack in Memphis.

In 1990, a schoolteacher, Betty Lou Stidham, was mauled to death by her neighbors Pit Bull in a vicious attack.

THIS IS WHY THEY NEED TO BE BANNED OR HIGHLY REGULATED!

THERE ARE TOO MANY JUST PLAIN STUPID PEOPLE OWNING THESE DOGS!
THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY TO ENSURE THEY ARE ONLY OWNED BY COMPETENT PEOPLE THAT WILL MAKE SURE THE DOG DOES NOT CAUSE TROUBLE OR KILL SOMEONE, SO WHAT ARE YOU WAITING ON LAWMAKERS? HOW MANY MORE TRAGIC DEATHS DO WE HAVE TO SEE BEFORE SOMETHING IS DONE?
THERE NEEDS TO BE AN OUTCRY FROM THE PUBLIC THAT DOES NOT LET UP UNTIL THEY DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS!

Unrelated to this attack, another Pit Bull has attacked in Memphis

Also, this is a new Pit Bull attack story that happened in Memphis TN.

(Memphis 11/21/2010) An eight-year-old girl attacked by a pit bull in Whitehaven was recovering at home, after being released from LeBonheur Children's Hospital with 42 stitches.

FAST FACTS:

Eight-year-old Terriona Rhea was attacked by a neighbor's pit bull on Saturday afternoon.

Rhea received 42 stitches at LeBonheur Children's Hospital.

She said she still loves dogs.

  1. great, there are photos. now the nutters can not line up and sing in unison, "they're probably not even pit bulls!"

photos should be mandatory after serious an fatal attacks. don't even name the breed/type, just slap up the photos.

not to make light of this tragedy and believe me there is no greater tragedy than being killed while engaging in mundane everyday activities like walking to the mailbox or the store but unless it is a pack attack in a rural area, you just won't have these situations arising with normal dogs.

  2. This is so sad. I agree with Craven that photos of dogs involved in major attacks ahould be made available.

What will it take for our goverment to finally do something about these dogs? There's obviously a serious problem with them, but no one's doing anything to stop it.

  4. Well maybe people that are not going to exercise or train there dogs shouldnt own pit bulls. If you live in an apartment you have no business owning a high active dog! And most of these dogs that do attack have broken loose from there chain in the back yard. If you are going to chain up a dog then dont get one! They are pack animals. Why dont you do something about the owners that have these dogs and educate people on the different types of dogs and what they need.

  5. Anon, the point is that people have no business owning a fighting breed period, regardless of if they are excercised or not. They are just too dangerous to have in this world around people, pets, livestock, babies, old people, cars, etc.

  6. Memphis resident sick of killer pitbulls and the stupid owners that can't control them.

The Memphis commercial appeal has recently had several articles written about pitbulls. All of them say the same thing pretty much, and that is, Memphis is a city that is riddled with crime, poverty, and dogfighting. In a situation where you have those elements coupled with pitbulls being the vast majority of dogs, they need to be banned. The pitnutters chime in as well saying it's the owners, not the dogs that should be dealt with, but how many times do we have to hear that tired line, how many more people must be killed before something is done? I say ban them. Or better yet we should just pay 20 bucks a pop for each pitbull brought in, dead or alive.

  7. Pitbulls do not serve a purpose other than protecting drugs, killing dogs, and equipping criminals with tools to intimidate and kill. What is a pitbull? A LEGAL GUN!

  8. That poor little girl she is so lucky someone there had a gun to shoot that pitbull. most people like her don't make it through an attack from a pitbull as we see from the story above where the memphis man was attacked and KILLED by the pitbulls. they need to be banned or bred down or will we allow this to keep happening?

  9. pits are the best

i have a pit in memphis. he is good to me and my family always. he will protect us at all costs. that being said, if you are stupid enough to come on my property, then you get what you deserve. its not the dogs, it is the people that can't control them. my dog kills other dogs. remedy? don't let him around other dogs. my dog will kill people if they are suspicious. remedy? don't let him around people that are not family. it ain't rocket science folks, damn.

  10. First..I have 5 American Pit Bull Terriers and they are nothing short of amazing. They get along with each other and other dogs. They can sense when something or someone is not quite right and i say god be with you if you come into my yard with bad intentions. They are on my command. I say friend they are cool with you, I say get 'em..you should run. But I made them that way..for my protection. They went to class for it. They are by far the best dogs in the world.
Second..some these comments are absolutley ridiculous. Some of the most ignorant things I have ever heard on here. I am not angry with the things said..but feel sorry for the people that said it. Yes there are some dogs that people have made "vicious" and there sadly is nothing you can do to help them. Owning these dogs is a right we have..if you dont like the dog then dont get one and stay away from them. I refuse to let this breed go down without a fight because of the ignorance of human kind. We are the reason for so much distruction already.
