Lynn approves pit bull muzzle ordinance

LYNN — The Lynn City Council has approved a law that requires pit bull owners to muzzle their pets when off their property.

Councilors on Tuesday also agreed to ask Mayor Judith Flanagan Kennedy to increase the manpower of the city’s animal control department, which currently has only one full-time officer, to enforce the rule.

The Daily Item of Lynn reports that the ordinance was passed after the council listened to nearly three hours of often passionate arguments from people on both sides of the debate.

The muzzle law was proposed by council President Timothy Phelan in May after several pit bull attacks on people in the city.

  1. Why do people hate the idea of muzzling their pits? I have a muzzle for my dog even though he has never done anything. I think all dog owners should keep a muzzle around. From decades of rescuing, I've learned to always have a muzzle because if a dog is injured or whatever, you may need to muzzle it for your own safety. Muzzles don't hurt the dog and most dogs don't even know it is there. I carry one in the car too although a leash acting as a muzzle is easier for strays. And if muzzling a pit makes the public feel better about having you and your pit around, then do it. Pit nutters are always talking about the bad image the public has, they are the cause by not trying to do anything that makes the public think they are a "responsible" owner. I've seen people who were scared of pit bulls actually pet one that was muzzled. Muzzling can only be a good thing.
